Spain Urges Russia to Match Ukraine’s Truce Step
(MENAFN) Spain’s foreign minister has described Ukraine’s latest ceasefire declaration as a meaningful signal of commitment to ending the war, while urging Russia to also halt its military actions.
In comments shared publicly, he said Ukraine’s decision to implement an unconditional pause in fighting demonstrates a clear intention to pursue peace, and called on Moscow to take similar steps to reduce hostilities and move toward ending the conflict.
The statement comes after Russia announced a temporary ceasefire linked to upcoming Victory Day commemorations, during which it said it would take measures to ensure security. Russian officials also warned of a strong military response if the celebrations were disrupted.
In response, Ukraine announced its own ceasefire beginning at midnight in Kyiv, stressing the importance of protecting civilian life over symbolic events. Ukrainian officials also said they had not received any formal coordination regarding Russia’s announced pause in fighting.
The developments highlight ongoing uncertainty around short-term ceasefire efforts, with both sides issuing separate and uncoordinated declarations amid continued conflict.
